⚠️ IMPORTANT – Bromine By-Products & Effects to Be Aware Of
Bromine naturally forms several by-products during water disinfection. These are not dangerous, but users should know how they behave and how to manage them.
1) Bromamines – normal, but should be controlled
Bromine reacts with sweat, cosmetics, body oils and urea, forming bromamines.
They are:
✔ milder than chloramines
✔ less irritating
✔ much lower odor
If bromamines accumulate, you may notice:
-
a light chemical smell
-
mild skin sensitivity (in rare cases)
-
reduced disinfection efficiency
How to reduce bromamines:
-
clean filters regularly
-
use non-chlorine shock once per week
-
shower before using the spa
2) Bromides (Br⁻) – safe, but may accumulate
As bromine works, it converts into bromide ions. These are harmless, but over time they can:
-
slightly reduce sanitation efficiency
-
increase tablet consumption
-
create a “heavier” water feel
Recommendation:
Change the spa water every 2–3 months.
3) Organic residues – caused by users, not bromine
Residues in spa water typically come from:
-
lotions
-
oils
-
cosmetics
-
sweat
-
dead skin particles
These can overload the filter and form a light film on the surface.
To avoid this:
-
rinse or shower before spa use
-
clean filters frequently
-
perform periodic system flushing
4) Over-dosing bromine
Excessive bromine levels may cause:
-
dry skin
-
mild eye or nose irritation
-
stronger chemical smell
-
faster wear of metal components (rare cases)
Optimal bromine level: 3–5 ppm
Water Testing Recommendation
To maintain safe and stable spa water:
-
check bromine levels regularly
-
maintain pH between 7.2–7.8
-
monitor alkalinity
-
refresh water periodically to avoid bromide buildup
Directions for Use
Place the tablets in a floating dispenser or the designated dosing compartment.
Never place tablets directly on acrylic surfaces.
